Monique Lovering: THE JOURNEY HOME
In my current obsession with ‘home’, I have concluded that my home traverses four different places – Australia, New Zealand, England and Sicily.
As I divide my time between thesecountries, my notion of home is less a physical residing place and much more a place of connectedness. Home then becomes a place of comfort, a place where you feel free to be yourself. These ‘homes’ have irrevocably changed the way I view the world. England is my birthplace, and the fabric of my earliest memories. The other three ‘homes influence my reading of nature, history and culture. While in New Zealand, I sense the ‘rawness’ of Sicily, and the connection people have to the land. I use similar colours when describing emotions and experiences; it’s about finding the human qualities beyond the facade. My love of Sicily is instinctual, as is my connection withNew Zealand. Australia holds memories of my childhood spent in Western Australia as a ‘ten-pound-pom’ new immigrant from England. I recall days travelling with my family in theharsh desert, dust and more dust. For now, Australia is where I live and work. ‘The Journey Home’ series is a biography, a culmination of all these experiences.
